Freetown: Mayoral candidate surges in opinion polls

Mohamed Gento Kamara, a businessman that is contesting for the seat of mayor of Freetown is surging for popularity leaving the incumbent Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr far behind, according to very reliable sources.

Gento’s success is due to his gradual cleaning of Freetown culminating in the cleaning of Abacha street, one of the dirtiest of streets of central Freetown that has been taken over by market women. Gento owns a construction company he used his machines and trucks to clean the place where some of Freetown’s poorest earn their living.

Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, commonly known as YAS to the educated, has not been able to clean the city for years despite significant funding from the government and foreign donors. She however often complained about lack of cooperation from the central government. She comes from the main opposition party, the All People’s Congress which does not seem to give her the support she needs. Sources say she is also too hostile and antagonistic to the ruling government.
