Manitoba: $27.5 million for housing support

The Manitoba and federal governments have earmarked a combined $27.5 million for a new initiative aimed at providing housing support for individuals escaping gender-based violence. This initiative, part of the Canada Housing Benefit program, is projected to support up to 2,600 households over five years. Funding will be provided to applicants through Manitoba’s Rent Assist program and income testing requirements will be removed in the first year of the benefit. Lorie English (Photo), Executive Director of the West Central Women’s Resource Centre, stressed the significance of removing barriers such as income testing, as it’s a crucial step to ensuring faster access to housing for survivors. English highlights that this aligns with a “trauma-informed approach” as it enables organizations to prioritize immediate shelter over paperwork, recognizing survivors’ urgent needs.
